From “I Can’t” to “I Can”: Turning Problems Into Opportunities [Video]

I CAN’T.

Two words that spell the difference between achievement and stagnation.

“I can’t” raises the question of agency. Therein lies its power.

According to Motivate Design CEO Mona Patel, who also authored Reframe: Shift the Way you Work, Innovate and Think, to say “I can’t” is to be human. It is an admission of powerlessness against problems. It is yielding to the constraints that prevent us from creating meaningful and lasting solutions.

Saying “I can’t” is choosing the easiest way. It’s easier than confronting a problem or challenge head on.

But it also causes us to get stuck.

“I can’t” thwarts our growth whether as individuals or as organizations.

So how do you shift from an “I can’t” to “I can”?

Design Your Way Around “I Can’t”

Where “I can’t” is deciding to go the easy route, the “I can” is choosing to go for the harder one. Shifting from “I can’t” to “I can” is a difficult process.

The shift begins when we consciously examine the excuses that we make to justify our indecision and inaction. Because these excuses – the fears and insecurities that we harbor – serve only to reinforce the limitations imposed on us from the outside by organizational politics, cultural expectations, and other hurdles.

They paralyze us and stunt our imagination.

Want to stop saying “I can’t”? Then develop the mindset and the will power to look at problems as windows to innovation. Stop treating problems as setbacks and start training yourself to ask “what if?”

It’s easier said than done, but as Mona stresses, you can build and develop it with constant exercise.
